This sculptural vase is a study in contrasts, balancing a soft, hand-sculpted form with a dynamic, energetic surface. Thrown on the potter's wheel, the vessel's undulating curves and gently flared rim are the result of the artist's hands guiding the clay, allowing it to take on an organic, self-formed shape.
The piece's dramatic surface is the product of a volatile horsehair Raku firing. After being heated in the kiln, the glowing-hot vessel was removed, and strands of horsehair were laid across its pale, burnished surface. The sharp, dendritic (tree-like) patterns are the carbon trails left behind as the hair instantly vaporized, permanently searing a one-of-a-kind design into the clay.
The final work captures a moment in time, pitting the quiet, deliberate curves of the form against the chaotic, untamed energy of the fire
Dimensions H:10” x D:4”
