Raku firing is a traditional Japanese pottery technique that involves removing pieces from the kiln while they are still glowing hot and then placing them in combustible materials like newspaper, sawdust, shredded paper and etc. This is to create unique surface effects. This method is my preferred specialty, as it produces distinctive metallic and shiny glazes that cannot be replicated through other firing processes. Although these glazes are not food safe, they are ideal for decorative pieces and perfectly safe for use with plants. The unpredictable nature of Raku firing ensures that each piece is truly one of a kind.

Reduction and Oxidation Firing in Ceramics

At Marz Makez, I utilize both reduction and oxidation firing techniques to create ceramics that are not only visually striking but also functional and durable.

Reduction Firing involves limiting the oxygen in the kiln atmosphere during firing. This environment affects the chemical reactions in the glaze and clay body, producing rich, varied, and often unpredictable colors and textures. Reduction firing can deepen hues, enhance metallic effects, and bring out subtle nuances in the glaze that oxidation cannot replicate. Despite the complex atmosphere, we carefully control the process to ensure the finished pieces are safe for food use and withstand dishwasher cycles.

Oxidation Firing takes place in a kiln with ample oxygen, resulting in brighter and more consistent glaze colors. This technique offers greater predictability and control over the final appearance, producing clean and vibrant finishes. Our oxidation-fired ceramics undergo rigorous testing to maintain food safety standards and dishwasher durability, ensuring practicality without sacrificing aesthetic quality.
